West Kimberley Futures - Empowered Communities

Six years ago, when Indigenous Leaders from eight regions around Australian combined their forces to drive a common reform agenda for Indigenous empowerment, Empowered Communities was born. Led by Indigenous people, for Indigenous people, this transformational reform is a new way of working based on the premise that empowered people set the foundation for empowered communities.

With eight regions spanning the entire country, including West Kimberley Empowered Communities, this widespread reform aims to increase the amount of influence and control Indigenous people have over the decisions that impact on their lives, a goal encompassed by their Organisational Vision:

"We want for our children the same opportunities and choices other Australians expect for their children. We want them to succeed in mainstream Australia, achieving educational success participating and prospering in the economy and living long healthy lives. We want them to retain their cultures, language and identities as peoples and to be recognised as Indigenous Australians."

About Broome and the Kimberley Region

With a rich history and extraordinary natural landscape, Broome is synonymous with the turquoise waters, red pindan soil and white sandy beaches that have draw visitors from across the globe. You can sail, snorkel, or dive in their pristine waters, spot rare dolphins from their wide empty beaches, or adventure through the nearby ancient gorges to marvel at the vast untouched landscapes that make Broome truly unique.

However, there's a lot more to Broome than just tourism - with strong population growth and significant investment in infrastructure, it's quickly becoming a destination of choice for families and individuals who want to take advantage of the area's welcoming and laid-back lifestyle whilst enjoying all of the amenities and facilities of a modern town.

The Kimberley region is located in the northern part of Western Australia and covers an area three times larger than England. Despite its size, it has only three main towns (Broome, Derby and Kununurra) and a total population of less than 40,000. Access to much of the region is by dirt road, air, or sea, but despite this isolation, visitors come from around the world to see some of the most stunning landscapes Australia has to offer, with majestic canyons, dramatic waterfalls and ancient cave systems, as well as some of the world’s most beautiful beaches and unique marine life.

Drive reform around Indigenous empowerment and bring together the West Kimberley region as one voice
